Why Recruiters Aren't Finding Your LinkedIn Profile

Resume Bot Buster Team· 10/21/2026· 2 min read

Most candidates optimise LinkedIn for people who already know them. Recruiters arrive a completely different way: through a boolean search inside LinkedIn Recruiter, filtered by title, skills, location, and activity.

How does LinkedIn recruiter search rank profiles?

The signals that consistently matter:

  • Headline and current title - weighted heavily for title matches.
  • Skills section - the top skills are matched directly against search filters.
  • About and Experience text - keyword matching across the body.
  • Location - a mismatch or blank location removes you from most searches.
  • Open to work (recruiter-visible) - surfaces you in a dedicated filter.
  • Recent activity - active profiles rank above dormant ones.

Fix your headline first

The default headline (your current job title) is a wasted asset if your internal title is not what recruiters search for.

Format that works: Target Title | Domain | Two or three core tools

Example: Senior Data Analyst | Healthcare Analytics | SQL, dbt, Tableau

Fix your skills list

Twenty to thirty relevant skills, with the three most important pinned to the top. Delete anything you would not want to be interviewed on. Endorsements matter less than presence in the list.

Fix your About section

Three short paragraphs: what you do and for whom, two or three concrete outcomes with numbers, and what you are looking for. Write it in first person and include the same vocabulary as the roles you want.

Fix your experience entries

Every role needs at least two lines of text. Empty roles are invisible to keyword search and read as unfinished to humans. Reuse your resume bullets, lightly rewritten in first-person voice.

The unglamorous settings

  • Set your location to the metro you are targeting, not a suburb nobody searches.
  • Turn on "Open to work" with recruiter-only visibility.
  • Set a custom public URL.
  • Add a clear photo - profiles with photos are opened far more often.

Does activity really matter?

Yes, and less effort is required than people assume. Two or three thoughtful comments a week on posts in your field is enough to keep you in the active tier and to put your name in front of people who hire.

A 45-minute rebuild

  1. Rewrite the headline (10 min)
  2. Rebuild skills, pin the top three (10 min)
  3. Rewrite About with numbers (15 min)
  4. Fill every empty experience entry (10 min)

Then leave it alone for two weeks and watch your profile-view source breakdown. If recruiter views do not rise, your title vocabulary is still wrong.
